WASHINGTON (WPRI) – In keeping with tradition, all four Democrats in Rhode Island’s congressional delegation have invited a local guest to attend President Obama’s State of the Union speech this evening.

Congressman Jim Langevin selected Erin Flynn, a RIC graduate herself, who is the New England Institute of Technology’s manager of admissions outreach and events. “Erin is working hard to close the skills gap in our state, which has been an obstacle to our local and national economic recovery,” Langevin said.

Published February 21, 2012

PROVIDENCE –

Following a fight he won for state backing for his new video game company, Red Sox star Curt Schilling is up and running in Providence.

Schilling’s out with his first new game, and he showed his 38 Studios for the first time to NBC 10.

The company takes up six floors of the old Blue Cross building and has room to expand.

“We’re filling it. We’ve been hiring since the day we got in here,” Schilling said.

The company has hired 280 workers, just a fraction of what the place can hold, and the building’s older than most of the staff.

Chafee looks to success of Pittsburgh to revitalize R.I.

PITTSBURGH –– In this city where the steel industry and manufacturing once dominated the economy, the 62nd floor of the U.S. Steel building towers over a revitalized downtown and offers sweeping views of rivers, new construction and both the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Heinz Field and the Pirates’ PNC Park.

But the operation inside the building is what lured Governor Chafee and his invited guests –– Rhode Island politicians, education and hospital executives, and business and labor leaders –– who hoped to learn lessons from Pittsburgh about how they might transform the Ocean State’s faltering economy.

Michael P. McKinney

BRISTOL — It was a meeting focused on such topics as open meetings in Rhode Island — then some protesters tried to open it up some more.

For more than 330 attendees, a mix of state and municipal officials, law enforcers, lawyers and others, Friday’s Open-Government Summit hosted by state Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin at the waterside Roger Williams University was about delving into when a record is public versus confidential, open versus closed meetings and conflicts of interest.

MILTON, Mass. — From the Eliot Tower at the summit of the Great Blue Hill here, hikers can look north and see the skyscrapers in downtown Boston.
