College Crusade – Passageways – September to December

A 10-week afterschool program that gives students the skills and social support they need to survive and thrive in high school. Held weekly in 11 high schools in Providence, Pawtucket, Central Falls, and Woonsocket, and Saturdays at Johnson & Wales University, Harborside Campus, Providence.

Cru Club – October to June 2012

A series of college-readiness and career-exploration programs provided to students after school and on Saturdays. Featured programs include college advising, adult mentoring, homework help, financial literacy, language arts enrichment, science and engineering workshops, study-skills and life-skills workshops, book clubs, writing workshops, career speakers, career decision-making activities, and service learning projects. Held weekdays in 23 Rhode Island middle schools and high schools and on Saturdays at Johnson & Wales University, Harborside Campus, Providence.To learn more about these programs

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Business Plan Competition announced the launch of its 2012 competition will take place Oct. 26, with Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee scheduled to be in attendance.

The kick-off event is free and open to the public and will be held at the Rhode Island Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship from 5 to 6:30 p.m.; online pre-registration is required.

Winners from last year’s competition will speak about their experience at the event and share insights on what it takes to win. Last year, the winner and finalists took home prizes valued at more than $250,000.

The competition will also host the Rhode Island Elevator Pitch Contest on Dec. 7.

“Startup companies are vital to the future growth of Rhode Island, and we’re seeing more and more established companies reaching out through the Business Plan Competition to support the next generation of entrepreneurs. We’re looking forward to another great year,” said Larry Davidson, principal with the Providence-based accounting firm of Kahn, Litwin, Renza & Co. and co-chair of the competition.

“Many factors favor Rhode Island as the startup state for new businesses, including a thriving network of entities, like the Business Plan Competition, focused on helping entrepreneurs, as well as access to a strong talent pool, connections to investors throughout the Northeast, and a good quality of life,” said Co-chair David Mitchell, dean of the College of Business at Johnson and Wales University.

The competition has two tracks: a student track for those enrolled in a university or an entrepreneur track for those aged 18 or over.

Teenage entrepreneur. An oxymoron, right? After all, teenagers sleep late, would rather hang out with friends than work and prefer buying over selling.
Here’s what teens have going for them, however: They have a lot of energy, they usually want money and they haven’t been told “can’t be done” often enough to buy into the mindset.
That’s what the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship counts on. The organization provides programs through schools and community groups that introduce the concept of entrepreneurship to teens, often setting them up to start their own businesses. Armed with a $1 million gift from MasterCard, the group is expanding to reach more students.

Knowledge is power, and the fine folks at local farmers markets statewide plan to use this philosophy to bring greater health to our area. They, the  Rhode Island Department of Health, and Johnson and Wales University have developed a program to not only provide low-income families with healthy, local produce, but, with recipes, demonstrations, free samples, and the know-how to use it all to best effect. At three weeks running, things seem to be going fine–and who knows? Maybe it’s the start of healthy things for a long time to come.

People walking around the Providence waterfront will now have new access to Narragansett Bay thanks to Johnson and Wales University.

On Tuesday morning, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held to formally announce the opening of the Johnson and Wales University Urban Coastal Greenway.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—An estimated 1,200 people in need will sit down for an early Thanksgiving dinner courtesy of Johnson and Wales University.

Tuesday’s annual event provides people who are homeless or otherwise in need with a Thanksgiving meal of roasted turkey, stuffing, gravy and all the fixings.
