Brown student uses art to inspire marine conservation

Courtney Mattison calls herself a visual learner with a passion for the arts and the marine environment. In April, the then-Brown University graduate student unveiled a roughly 10-foot-by-15-foot ceramic coral reef in the lobby of the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C. The department is the parent of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the federal agency charged with overseeing America’s coastal waters. Mattison recently spoke with Providence Business News about her project and her future.

Truck Farm: A Wicked Delicate Film and Food Project

Curt Ellis and Ian Cheney, filmmakers behind the films King Corn and The Greening of Southie

In celebration of Earth Week, Ellis and Cheney are hitting the road with their public art project Truck Farm, a rolling garden they’ve installed in the back of a vintage pickup. In a 1200 mile tour, they are exhibiting the truck at schools along the eastern seaboard and screening clips from the Truck Farm documentary they are making about urban agriculture. While at Brown, Ellis and Cheney will speak about the importance of sustainable and local agriculture and share segments of their work-in-progress Truck Farm film. Make sure to visit the Truck Farm outside of Sayles Hall on the College Green before and after the event!

Author Salman Rushdie to speak at Brown

PROVIDENCE — Author Sir Salman Rushdie will speak at Brown University Feb. 16 on “Public Events, Private Lives: Literature and Politics in the Modern World.”

The event, at 5:30 p.m. in the Salomon Center for Teaching, DeCiccio Family Auditorium, is free to the public. It is sponsored by the Year of India, the Cogut Center for the Humanities and the Watson Institute for International Studies, the university said in a news release.
