In April, the then-Brown University graduate student unveiled a roughly 10-foot-by-15-foot ceramic coral reef in the lobby of the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C. The department is the parent of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the federal agency charged with overseeing America’s coastal waters. Mattison recently spoke with Providence Business News about her project and her future.

Curt Ellis and Ian Cheney, filmmakers behind the films King Corn and The Greening of Southie

In celebration of Earth Week, Ellis and Cheney are hitting the road with their public art project Truck Farm, a rolling garden they’ve installed in the back of a vintage pickup. In a 1200 mile tour, they are exhibiting the truck at schools along the eastern seaboard and screening clips from the Truck Farm documentary they are making about urban agriculture. While at Brown, Ellis and Cheney will speak about the importance of sustainable and local agriculture and share segments of their work-in-progress Truck Farm film. Make sure to visit the Truck Farm outside of Sayles Hall on the College Green before and after the event!

This event is being held in conjunction with Food on the Move: America’s Traveling Tastes, a collaborative exhibit between students in Brown University’s M.A. program in public humanities and the Johnson Wales Culinary Arts Museum. The exhibit opens to the public at the Culinary Arts Museum on April 16.

Sponsored by Brown Dining Services, Brown University Sustainable Food Initiative (SuFI), the Center for Environmental Studies, emPOWER, the John Nicholas Brown Center for Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage at Brown University, EcoRI, and Whole Foods Market.

PROVIDENCE — Author Sir Salman Rushdie will speak at Brown University Feb. 16 on “Public Events, Private Lives: Literature and Politics in the Modern World.”

The event, at 5:30 p.m. in the Salomon Center for Teaching, DeCiccio Family Auditorium, is free to the public. It is sponsored by the Year of India, the Cogut Center for the Humanities and the Watson Institute for International Studies, the university said in a news release.

The Indian-born British writer was named one of the world’s top 100 public intellectuals by Foreign Policy magazine in 2005. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to literature in 2007.

“Rushdie is among the most impressive commitments of literary intelligence to Indian materials,” Ashutosh Varshney, professor of political science at Brown, said in the news release. Varshney co-edited the 2009 essay collection “Midnight’s Diaspora: Encounters with Salman Rushdie.”

Rushdie’s 1988 novel, “The Satanic Verses,” was highly controversial and was banned in several Islamic countries for what was perceived as a blasphemous depiction of Mohammed. The book prompted Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to issue a fatwa against Rushdie, who subsequently spent several years in hiding.
