2012 Global Game Jam At New England Tech This Weekend

New England Tech has been selected as an official host site for the 2012 Global Game Jam. This 48-hour game design event will be held at 244 jam sites worldwide on Jan. 27-29. This is the first time this international event will be held in Rhode Island. Now in its fourth year, Global Game Jam continues to grow in popularity. In 2011, more than 1500 games were created by over 6,500 people in 44 countries with increased participation again this year.

Wind turbine tour to be held at N.E. Tech

The Rhode Island Renewable Energy Siting Partnership, a state effort being facilitated by the University of Rhode Island, will hold a wind turbine tour on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 5 p.m. at the New England Institute of Technology turbine on 2500 Post Road, Warwick.

Participants will be able to see how a local wind turbine looks and operates, and also how it provides a source of renewable energy. The New England Tech wind turbine is 156 feet tall and the solar electric system size is 23,630 watts.

The tour is free and open to the public, but space is limited and RSVP is required. To RSVP, call Sue Kennedy at 874-6107 or email her at skennedy@crc.uri.edu.

NEIT to vacate most of Post Road campus next month

By the middle of next month, most of New England Institute of Technology will have pulled up stakes on Post Road and moved to its giant complex in East Greenwich. What will remain here beside the black-bladed wind turbine visible from Route 95, which is a component of NEIT’s electronics program, will be four buildings on in its Access Road Campus and for the foreseeable future, some programs on the Post Road campus.

Demand for health care jobs rising

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Occupational therapists are in big demand. The 2011 Compensation Data Healthcare survey results found the average base salary for occupational therapists has increased 6.3 percent to $69,700 in 2011 from $65,000 in 2009.

In Rhode Island, in 2010, a salary of $65,000 was the mean for a master’s-level occupational therapist, according to Rebecca Simon, the academic-fieldwork coordinator the New England Institute of Technology’s occupational therapy department.

New England Tech is now in its second year of offering a master of science in occupational therapy, the only master’s-level program at New England Tech, and the only master’s for occupational therapy in Rhode Island.

Schilling encourages NEIT grads to ‘change the world’

Curt Schilling, former Major League Baseball pitcher, said that while he was invited to speak at several events around the country this year, he knew Sunday’s 70th commencement ceremony for New England Institute of Technology (NEIT) was one he did not want to miss.

In fact, he said he had an ulterior motive for attending. With 38 Studios, his Providence-based software company, he was scouting new talent among the 1,334 graduates.

Three all-female robotics teams competed in Saturday’s FIRST Tech challenge, which drew 300 high school students from 32 public and independent schools to the New England Tech Center for Automotive Technology.

For the fifth year, New England Institute of Technology will sponsor the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Tech Challenge on Saturday, Feb. 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Serving as Rhode Island’s FIRST® Tech Challenge Affiliate Partner, this statewide high school robotics competition will take place at the New England Tech Center for Automotive Technology located at 101 Access Road, Warwick.
