PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A Roger Williams University professor and lawyer co-founded a new application, LawyerUp, making legal advice accessible at all times.

“The thought was if I can get a pizza in 15 minutes why can’t I get a lawyer in 15 minutes,” LawyerUp attorney, Jason Knight said.

Currently available for Android phones, it will soon be ready for purchase on the iPhone.

Typically, a university commencement is the final step for students on their way to a diploma.

This year, it was Rowan University President Donald Farish’s final step, too.

After 13 years as Rowan’s head, directing major change and expansion as part of a 10-year plan, Farish is moving on to Roger Williams University in Rhode Island beginning in July.

EAST PROVIDENCE — Teachers have a new way to earn a master’s degree in teaching, thanks to a unique partnership between Roger Williams University and a private school in East Providence.

In the Teacher Residency Program at The Gordon School, students will spend their days immersed in the classroom at The Gordon School, which spans nursery through middle school in East Providence. After the regular school day, graduate students will take theory classes from faculty members at both institutions. Graduates will earn a master of arts degree in teaching from Roger Williams University and elementary-school certification from the state Department of Education.

“Roger Williams was drawn to us because of their desire to bring multicultural teaching into their master’s program,” said Ralph Wales, head of school at Gordon. “Graduate students will serve as apprentices. They will be living and breathing inside of our school for a year.”

The multicultural approach encourages teachers to explore how their own identity, gender and race shape instruction, and it helps them understand the perspectives of students whose lives may be very different from their own.

“We’re using a lens that’s relevant to students,” said Lynn Bowman, director of Gordon’s Teacher Residency Program.

The collaboration between Gordon and Roger Williams reflects a national conversation about what some view as a gap between what education students are learning at the university and what they experience in a public-school classroom.

“This is a seamless integration of theory and practice,” Bowman said of the joint venture. “Just as it is the Gordon School’s intention to send our eighth graders out as innovative thinkers who create change in the world, we want our graduate students to discover habits of mind and a disposition in the classroom that will help them connect with children.”

Graduate students will have the opportunity to observe master teachers, ask questions about classroom instruction, prepare lesson plans under supervision and learn how to assess students’ work.

“Our graduate students will experience the full range of what it means to be a teacher,” Bowman said. “They will talk with parents, attend faculty meetings and collaborate with other teachers.”

The program will begin this fall with at least six students and graduates will be prepared to teach in a variety of school settings, including urban schools and charter schools.
