Editor’s Note: The United Way of Rhode Island and NBC 10 have awarded the Jefferson Awards for Public Service to three Southern New Englanders whose volunteer work goes largely unnoticed by the general public.

Eighteen-year-old Adam Brunetti is already making his mark by using his love of music and drama to raise funds and awareness for a cause close to his heart: autism.

“I could not believe it,” said Erin Flynn of Congressman Jim Langevin’s recent invite to attend the President’s State of the Union address in Washington, D.C. Tuesday night. “I did not stop bouncing around from the minute he called until the minute I was leaving.”

Flynn, who has worked more than 25 years at the New England Institute of Technology, is a leader in Rhode Island educational initiatives designed to help build a skilled workforce. She has partnered with Langevin on one of his key workforce development efforts, the High School Cyber Foundations Competition, which the congressman brought to Rhode Island as a model for introducing youths to expanding industries like cyber security.

Coventry Patch

The Coventry School Committee approved curriculum changes at its Tuesday night meeting that will emphasize integration of more math and technology skills for students next year.

Participants will build and fly their own model plane, visit an aviation school, and learn about careers associated with flight. The College Crusade of Rhode Island has announced the start of its 2011 fall schedule, which includes dozens of free programs and activities designed to increase educational and career success for students in Rhode Island’s low-income urban communities. College Crusade programs are offered weekdays after school, on weekends, and during school vacations. Programs range from academic enrichment and science workshops to college visits, career exploration, and adventure education.

Robotics Club – September to February 2012 A robotics team that offers high school students the opportunity to participate in the FIRST Tech Challenge, a robotics competition hosted by New England Institute of Technology. Teams are responsible for designing, building, and programming their robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. Meets weekly at The College Crusade office in Providence.
