Several members of the Downtown Bristol Merchants Association met with Senator Sheldon Whitehouse on Tuesday to discuss issues facing their small businesses.
The meeting was held at Roger Williams University and was preceded by an earlier meeting with University President, Dr. Donald Farish. Co-chairperson Alayne White of Alayne White Spa told Senator Whitehouse that while they were glad he reached out to them, it was important for the group to keep the regularly scheduled association meeting separate as “the presence of Roger Williams University is a real economic force in Bristol.”

WHAT DO RHODE ISLAND and Michigan have in common besides the nation’s highest unemployment rates? We both are moving toward a knowledge-based economy. For two states built on manufacturing, this transition can be achieved only with the full commitment of business and education working closely together. Rhode Island is well poised to successfully execute this significant economic paradigm shift because of our greatest resource: our students.
Some cities are worth visiting just for their outstanding restaurants, and Providence, R.I., certainly fits into that category.
For years I used to pass through Providence on Interstate 95, on the way to Boston or Maine, admiring the magnificent dome of the State House building and making a mental note to stop sometime. I realized that Providence had other attractions only when the son of a neighbor told me he was studying to be a chef at Johnson & Wales University’s famed culinary program.
Hmm. Culinary school = great chefs. Great chefs = great restaurants. Eureka! I was on my way.
Students are demanding fresh, high quality, fast food. Johnson & Wales University is responding.

Rhode Island Independent Higher Education Association (RIIHEA)
PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Independent Higher Education Association (RIIHEA), the membership association comprised of Rhode Island’s eight independent colleges and universities, announced that effective July 1, 2008 the organization’s new name will be “Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Rhode Island (AICU Rhode Island). ”
The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Rhode Island (AICU Rhode Island), founded in 1979 as Rhode Island Independent Higher Education Association (RIIHEA), serves as the collective and unified voice of its member institutions, Brown University, Bryant University, Johnson and Wales University, New England Institute of Technology, Providence College, Rhode Island School of Design, Roger Williams University, and Salve Regina University.
“It is our belief that this name change will clarify the Association’s identity and purpose by eliminating identity confusion created by like-named entities” said AICU Rhode Island President, Daniel P. Egan. “This will enable us to more effectively pursue our mission in representing our member institutions and to communicate their collective contributions and impact.”
In 2007, a two-part survey was sent to representatives of each of RHODE ISLAND’S postsecondary institutions. The survey collected information about the overall scope of each institution’s partnerships with PK-12 schools and districts, and also asked the institutions to identify the five partnerships that had the greatest impact, were the most innovative and were the most replicable. A newly released preliminary report presents an initial summary of the findings. A more detailed report will be presented to the Governor’s PK-16 Council this June.

THE DEC. 13 SNOWSTORM that left scores of Providence schoolchildren stranded for hours on buses drove home the message that the Ocean State needs a communication system that will get the right information to the right people at the right time. It would be terrific if it were also the right price.
