The transportation option is now available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to all students, faculty, and staff ages 18 and older, as well as members of the local community ages 21 and over.

Local residents as well as Roger Williams University students, faculty and staff will benefit from the school’s recent partnership with Zipcar, Inc., that offers a Zipcar car-sharing program on campus.

BRISTOL — For the second time in school history, the Roger Williams University Sailing team is ranked number one in the nation among all collegiate sailing teams, according to the national rankings composed by Sailing World.

The Hawks nearly swept all the first place votes among the rankings, receiving 18 of the 19 first place votes and tallying 378 points, 42 more than second-ranked Dartmouth College. Yale University, ranked third, received the other first-place vote.Click here to read story in its entirety

BRISTOL — The community is invited to several events next week at Roger Williams University in celebration of the inauguration of the university’s new president, Donald J. Farish, Ph.D.

Inauguration Week is from Monday, Oct. 10, through Friday, Oct. 14, and many of the events will be free and open to the public. The university will inaugurate its 10th president, Donald J. Farish, on Thursday, Oct. 13. Limited tickets are available to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Call (401) 254-3201 for tickets.

New president shares philosophy on higher education and the university’s role in the community

BRISTOL — A garrulous man with an easy smile, Donald J. Farish, the new president at Roger Williams University, speaks volumes about the state of higher education, rattling off statistics on the percentage of degrees earned by socioeconomic class and the level of unemployment in New England without consulting notes, and on how universities should respond and address the educational needs of all people.

But with faculty, staff and students, he’s taken a different approach — at least for these first few months.

“What I am doing is a lot of listening,” said Mr. Farish, who last served 13 years as president of Rowan University, a state university with a student population of about 11,000 in Glassboro, N.J. “But it isn’t all one-sided. I’m trying out my own ideas. It’s a back and forth.”

This Thursday, Roger Williams University graduate students will get the opportunity to present their work and research on ways to improve and preserve the town of Warren’s architectural history.

The Warren Preservation Society, whose goal is to raise awareness of the historic importance that lives within the streets and buildings of Warren, collaborated with the university earlier this year to help come up with a historic preservation plan for the town. On Thursday, from 7 to 9 pm, university professor Arnold Robinson and his students will present their public poll results, study and findings at the First United Methodist Church in Warren.

Back in April, the students began to put together the preservation plan to identify the historic resources around Warren to provide to the town as a reference tool when working on their comprehensive plan.

“The first thing that is always done before planning is to understand previous plans that have gone before,” Robinson said in April.

Before going out in to the field this spring, the students were required to go through the last historic planning survey for the town, which was done back in 1975. The students used the outdated survey to begin to identify historic resources as defined by the National Register. After that, students went out in the field and created an online poll to gather information from residents.

“The plan offers the Town an updated review of its historic resources and policy recommendations for both town government and for local preservation groups,” said Warren Town Planner Caroline Wells. “The plan is based on extensive work by Arnold and his students, and I would say that it is comparable to expensive private consultants.”

Wells says she is very excited and thankful for the work done by the university students and hopes that the plan will help the town in future years.

“This work would not have been done without the university,” she said. “The Town does not have staff, time or financial resources to hire out such a study. I think that their recommendations are common sense and based on professional best practices in preservation planning, so I hope much of it will be implemented.”

The public is invited to attend the presentation of the historic preservation plan, which will include the possible paths for preservation of Warren’s historic resources as well as a summary of the plan. They will discuss a distillation of Warren’s Historic character, a review of historic preservation efforts to date, and an updated survey of historic resources, including those that may be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. They will review Warren’s unique preservation issues specifically: Historic Open Spaces, Churches, and Archeology – and how each is important to the character of Warren. The final point of the presentation will be the group’s assessment of existing conditions and a discussion of possible methods that can be used to increase and improve preservation efforts.
