JWU to co-sponsor Cox Rhode Races marathon

PROVIDENCE – The Cox Providence Rhode Races next May will feature a marathon, co-sponsored by Johnson & Wales University, representatives of the city, the university and the sports community announced this morning.

“JWU has had a long tradition of participating in cross-country racing, which dates back to the early ’60s,” Irving Schneider, the university’s Providence Campus president, said in a statement this morning. The new race will honor that history with an award in the name of former administrator Col. John McNulty, who helped launch cross-country racing at the school then known as Johnson & Wales Junior College.

$750,000 grant to aid creation of arts center at Salve

NEWPORT – Two historic carriage house and stable complexes on the Salve Regina University campus will be transformed into a Center for Arts and Culture, thanks to a $750,000 challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation.

To receive the Kresge funds, the university first must meet its goals of raising $12 million in private funding – including $7.5 million in capital funds for the Carriage House and Stable Restoration Project, plus $3 million for annual/program support and $1.5 million toward its endowment – by Oct. 1, 2008.

Said the Rev. Brian J. Shanley, who succeeded Father Smith, “Father Smith ably led Providence College through eleven years of opportunity and growth. Under his guidance, the academic profile of our student body dramatically improved and the campus landscape was transformed.” “I know that Father Smith was particularly gratified to oversee the building of St. Dominic Chapel, a dream that the college had long deferred,” Shanley said. “His legacy is one that we will always treasure and never forget.”
