Bryant’s service learning program given national honor

University named to President’s Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), on February 11, named Bryant University to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for the university’s exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth.

“We’re honored that the efforts of the Bryant community are being recognized in this way,” said Sandra Enos, an associate professor of sociology who incorporates service learning into many of her classes. “It takes a village – or, in our case, the Bryant community – to create a culture of service. By providing service learning opportunities in the classroom and volunteer opportunities within the community, our students are acquiring the skills to implement creative solutions to some of society’s problems.”

Poet Michael Harper Awarded Frost Medal for Lifetime Achievement

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] - Poet Michael S. Harper, University Professor and professor of English at Brown, has been named the recipient of the 2008 Frost Medal from the Poetry Society of America (PSA), which honors distinguished lifetime service to American poetry. Harper will receive the award and deliver the Frost Medal Lecture on Monday, April 21, 2008, during the PSA’s 98th Annual Awards Ceremony at the National Arts Club in New York City.

SALVE REGINA RECEIVES PRESIDENT’S HONOR ROLL AWARD FOR SERVICE

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Corporation for National and Community Service named Salve Regina University to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll With Distinction for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth.

Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the award were chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovativeness of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

Providence College Names First Emergency Management Director

Providence, RI - Koren V. Kanadanian has been named Providence College’s first director of emergency management. His appointment culminates the review of the Emergency Response Plan (ERP) that began last spring with the formation of the Emergency Response Planning Committee.

Kanadanian, who began his duties on January 28, 2008 is a former sergeant with the Franklin, Mass., Police Department, where he served for the past 12 years. He has extensive experience in criminal justice, security, anti-terrorism/counter-terrorism mitigation, emergency medical services, and emergency management.

Father Shanley’s Essay Published in Prestigious Harvard Journal

Providence, RI - An essay written by President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. about Providence College’s two-pronged effort to close the “student accessibility gap” has been published in the current Winter 2007 edition of the Harvard Educational Review.

Father Shanley was invited last fall to write an essay for this edition of the Review, which features a symposium on equity and access in higher education. His article appeared with others authored by the president of Princeton University and academics affiliated with the University of Southern California and the University of California, Santa Barbara.
