Shanley, O.P. ‘80 told a group of business leaders that he continues to strenuously oppose two bills before the Rhode Island General Assembly that would allow the City of Providence to implement a student impact fee and collect taxes on up to 25 percent of large, tax-exempt nonprofits’ assessed property values.

I AGREE with Mayor David Cicilline when he says that he has a fiscal and moral obligation to find creative solutions for Providence’s budget deficit that do not further burden those who already contribute significantly to the city’s financial well-being. Unfortunately, the mayor does not consider private colleges and their students among those who already bear their fair share of the fiscal burden. On this point we deeply disagree.

Providence, RI - An essay written by President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. about Providence College’s two-pronged effort to close the “student accessibility gap” has been published in the current Winter 2007 edition of the Harvard Educational Review.
Father Shanley was invited last fall to write an essay for this edition of the Review, which features a symposium on equity and access in higher education. His article appeared with others authored by the president of Princeton University and academics affiliated with the University of Southern California and the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Said the Rev. Brian J. Shanley, who succeeded Father Smith, “Father Smith ably led Providence College through eleven years of opportunity and growth. Under his guidance, the academic profile of our student body dramatically improved and the campus landscape was transformed.” “I know that Father Smith was particularly gratified to oversee the building of St. Dominic Chapel, a dream that the college had long deferred,” Shanley said. “His legacy is one that we will always treasure and never forget.”
