Salve Community Celebrates their new President

NEWPORT, R.I. – Urging students to be restless in spirit and keep open minds, Sister Jane Gerety was installed as Salve Regina University’s seventh president on Friday, taking over for Sister M. Teresa Antone, who announced last year that she would be retiring from her administrative duties.

Salve Regina University was awarded a $5,000 grant from the John E. Fogarty Foundation to help finance its Learning Unlimited program for developmentally disabled adults. The grant will support the second year of the program’s Defining Moments project, which pairs students from the university with developmentally disabled adult learners to collect their stories, photographs and quotes about defining moments in their lives for a book celebrating their lives.

Their work is done under the direction of Associate professor of psychology Sheila O’Brien Quinn

Salve celebrates Pawtucket success

PAWTUCKET - Faculty, staff and administrators from Salve Regina University were joined by Mayor James Doyle and other local officials in celebrating the success of the school’s Pawtucket facility on Tuesday.

The event, which included a blessing of the facility by the Rev. Thomas O’Neil, the school’s chaplain, was intended to recognize the success of the Pawtucket learning center, located on the second floor of the Pawtucket Visitors Center. According to a statement from the school, the Pawtucket facility has grown at a remarkable rate since its beginnings as a pilot program two years ago.

SALVE REGINA RECEIVES PRESIDENT’S HONOR ROLL AWARD FOR SERVICE

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Corporation for National and Community Service named Salve Regina University to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll With Distinction for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth.

Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the award were chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovativeness of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

$750,000 grant to aid creation of arts center at Salve

NEWPORT – Two historic carriage house and stable complexes on the Salve Regina University campus will be transformed into a Center for Arts and Culture, thanks to a $750,000 challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation.

To receive the Kresge funds, the university first must meet its goals of raising $12 million in private funding – including $7.5 million in capital funds for the Carriage House and Stable Restoration Project, plus $3 million for annual/program support and $1.5 million toward its endowment – by Oct. 1, 2008.
