Leo Caiafa, Jr. was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, then ran an automotive shop in Amarillo, Texas, for more than 40 years. He died in 2013, leaving an extended family that includes a great-niece, Julianne Szemko ’19 (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), who is studying psychology at Providence College. 

A deep and meaningful relationship has developed from that modest connection, leading to a $1 million donation from Mr. Caiafa’s estate to establish the Lucille and Leo Caiafa, Jr. Center for Psychological Sciences, which will be part of the expanded and renovated Providence College Science Complex.

The Caiafa gift is the first major donation to the multi-phase science center project, which began in June and will take four years to complete. It will modernize the complex and unite its three buildings — Albertus Magnus Hall, which opened in 1948 as the third building on campus; Hickey Hall, a laboratory building that opened in 1962; and Sowa Hall, a faculty office building that opened in 1989.

PROVIDENCE – Brown University has one of the best women’s studies programs in the country, according to College Choice.

The college search and rankings website released a list on Wednesday ranking the “50 Best Women’s Studies Programs in the U.S.”

Brown University ranked 23rd.

Brown University was praised for its consistently strong rankings and notable and successful alumni. It was recognized for its its Gender and Sexuality Studies Program, as well as the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women which manages archives and collections on women and feminist history and publishes “differences: A Journal of Feminist Cultural Studies” three times a year.

PROVIDENCE – Earlier this month, The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Hope Hospice & Palliative Care Rhode Island announced a renewed and expanded affiliation for five additional years.

This agreement formalizes the very strong relationship we have with the medical school, our commitment to train physicians and future physicians in hospice and palliative care and the medical school’s recognition that this kind of education is an important part of training, Dr. Ed Martin, chief medical officer at Hope Hospice RI, said in a phone interview with Providence Business News. The two organizations, which first affiliated in 2012, have long collaborated in providing training every year.

Partnership will provide programs and resources to the State’s growing Latino population

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Roger Williams University School of Continuing Studies and the Rhode Island Latino Civic Fund today announced a new partnership that will enhance collaborative opportunities, as well as provide university-supported resources to the RILCF and its efforts to provide inclusive civic education and political participation among the Ocean State’s Latino population.
