N.E. Tech gets 2nd federal grant of $2.5 million for shipbuilding institute

The New England Institute of Technology has won a second $2.5-million federal grant to expand the shipbuilding and advanced manufacturing institute it created when it won its earlier grant in 2013.

New England Tech will add five programs to its two core training programs at the institute, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Those new programs will offer shipfitting, pipe welding, sheetmetal, pipefitting and robotics classes to 200 Rhode Island students.

RISD conference focuses on transforming R.I. economy

PROVIDENCE — If you’re going to solve a problem in your business, you must first determine the real problem. Designers call this “figuring out the essential question.”

That’s one message Charlie Cannon shared Monday with business leaders, entrepreneurs, engineers and manufacturers who gathered at the Rhode Island School of Design to figure out ways that design can help transform manufacturing.

RI Universities Seek Greater Collaboration to Launch More Businesses

Rhode Island’s independent colleges and universities are seeking greater collaboration in the areas of entrepreneurial education and venture development, according to Brown University Social Innovation Initiative Director, Alan Harlam.

“We are happy to share our knowledge, we are happy to collaborate, and we see an opportunity both in the social impact space and also outside of it to use Brown’s model of entrepreneurial education and venture development to launch more businesses,” said Harlam.

Roger Williams University freshmen begin school year with community service

BRISTOL, R.I. — Classes don’t start until Wednesday for freshmen at Roger Williams University, but already more than 800 have fulfilled one of their graduation requirements, a day of service at one of about 40 local nonprofits.

Some of them planted trees, did landscaping, cleared grounds and lots, removed trash from a waterfront, moved hay, cleaned books, took down bird boxes and more.

Monday was the 10th Annual Community Connections Day, in which freshmen work on projects coordinated for them by the university’s Feinstein Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement.
