RISD, Brown students unveil plan to transform Central Falls’ urban landscape

PROVIDENCE — The outpouring of support for Central Falls, the first city in state history to go through federal bankruptcy, has continued to blossom.

On Tuesday, urban studies and design students from the Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University unveiled the “Central Falls Comprehensive Master Plan,” to transform the 1.3-square-mile urban landscape into a picturesque oasis dotted with scores of trees, bikeways and gardens.

The plans are so ambitious it’s hard to imagine that the state’s most densely populated city with 19,400 residents wouldn’t soon become a very different place.

RISD’s STEAM Map is Charting the Rapid Growth & Support of the Arts

The Rhode Island School of Design knows there is more to education than just science, technology, engineering and math. The Providence-based college has been striving to inject “art” into the acronym, and a new map launched Wednesday highlights thought leaders, both local and abroad, are supporting the cause.

RISD revealed the STEAM Map during an industry briefing held on Capitol Hill in collaboration with Congressional STEAM Caucus Co-chairs Suzanne Bonamici and Aaron Schock. The map is intended to help visualize STEAM activity worldwide, enabling advocates, practitioners and followers of the movement to connect with each other and show decision makers the impact and relevancy of art and design.

Bryant University commencement speaker urges students to develop their ‘emotional quotient’

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — Reaching past the standard maxims that are a fixture of so many graduations, prominent banker Richard W. Fisher quoted his mother Saturday at Bryant University’s 151st commencement, during which 754 undergraduates received their degrees:

“Never let your brains go to your head,” is what Magnhild Andersen Fisher told her children, Fisher said.

Fisher, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and a voting member of the Federal Open Market Committee, which sets national monetary policy, spoke of “the exquisite pearls of wisdom” his mother bestowed on him and his brother, Michael E. Fisher, a 1967 Bryant graduate and outgoing chairman of the school’s board of trustees.
