JWU’s PA Program Achieves 100% Pass Rate

For the second year in a row, 100% of JWU’s graduating class of physician assistants have passed the board certification exam administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. All 24 Class of 2017 students passed on the first try.

“This is truly a remarkable achievement,” notes George Bottomley, DVM, PA-C, dean of JWU’s College of Health & Wellness and founding director of JWU’s physician assistant studies program. “We set the bar high when we first selected students for the inaugural class that began in 2014. All 23 students graduated on time and achieved a 100% pass rate of the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE). Our second class has followed suit by doing the same.”

Of the 24 physician assistant students who graduated this May, 10 have accepted positions in Rhode Island.

“Our second class of physician assistants all came through — as we expected them to — and it is another validation of how good the program is that we’ve put together here,” notes Rebecca Lovell Scott, PhD, PA-C, the PA program’s director.

At the 2016 White Coat Ceremony marking the Class of 2017’s official transition from the classroom to the clinic, Vice Chancellor Tom Dwyer charged them with making the 100% pass rate an annual JWU tradition. Congratulations to all 24 new alumni for making good on his request.

Project Scientist’s STEM Academy Fosters Young Scientists at JWU

8/11/17 | This summer, Johnson & Wales University’s Charlotte Campus collaborated with Project Scientist to offer a STEM-focused summer academy for girls ages 4-12 with a passion, talent and aptitude for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). This marked the first time the academy was held at JWU Charlotte.

“We love the urban location. It’s easy for parents to drop off their daughter on the way to work,” Project Scientist’s CEO and founder, Sandy Marshall, said. “We like the classroom space, the outdoor space for lunch and PE — and the technology. We Skype with STEM professionals from across the world.”

Students started their mornings in JWU Charlotte’s Hance Auditorium listening to STEM superstars, including Ashley Hall, a clinical research scientist with GlaxoSmithKline.

JWU’s ADTEAM Wins the 2017 National Student Advertising Competition

6/12/17 | JWU Providence’s ADTEAM has won the 2017 American Advertising Federation (AAF) National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC), held in New Orleans. Their historic first-place win surpasses their previous best — a second-place finish at Nationals in 2015.

JWU’s 31-member team, made up of students in the university’s advertising and marketing communications, marketing, graphic design and media communication studies programs, placed first in the United States over 7 other finalists:

  • The University of Kentucky
  • Florida State University
  • Oklahoma State University
  • University of Central Oklahoma
  • Webster University
  • Grand Valley State University
  • South Dakota State University

All teams gave presentations before a judging panel that included executives from Tai Pei, this year’s NSAC corporate client. The first-place finish also came with a $3,500 grand prize.

All college teams that competed created an advertising campaign for this year’s corporate client, Tai Pei, which offers over 10 varieties of single-serve, takeout-style entrées, an assortment of Asian appetizers and a full line of family-sized products. The campaigns included each element of advertising: television, radio, social media, and print.
