NEWPORT, R.I. – Silence filled the great hall of Ochre Court. The cameras rolled and the audience sat in hushed anticipation of the special guest. Salve Regina President Sister Jane Gerety gave the opening remarks welcoming the Secretary to the University.

Hosted by Jim Ludes, Executive Director of the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy, and G. Wayne Miller, Senior Staff Writer at The Providence JournalStory in the Public Square is a weekly 30-minute program that tries to make sense of the stories shaping public life in the United States.

Upon answering the first question from Story in the Public Square co-host Jim Ludes, Kerry broke his stoicism. “First of all, I’m glad the Red Sox won last night,” he said, to much laughter and amusement of the audience.

Salve hosting Egyptian nursing students for observational tour

Twelve aspiring nursing students from Egypt are taking part in a two-week observational study tour hosted by Salve Regina at the request of the Institute of International Education.

The study tour is part of the LOTUS scholarship program, which is funded by the United States Agency for International Development with the support of the American people. LOTUS offers comprehensive scholarship packages to talented and deserving Egyptian students with a demonstrated financial need to obtain degrees from Egyptian private universities. Students are selected based on their potential to play a leadership role in areas of high demand that are critical to Egypt’s development.

This year’s study tour included two weeks of English language training at the University of Kentucky, followed by two weeks of nursing education at Salve Regina. While at the University, students have visited a wide array of medical facilities and health care organizations, including Hope Hospice, PACE, Hasbro Children’s Hospital, Women and Infants Hospital, Planned Parenthood, Newport Hospital and the Newport Health Equity Zone.

The visits have been augmented by lectures and demonstrations by a host of Salve nursing faculty and organization representatives on a wide range of advanced nursing topics, including community mental health, genetics and health histories, holistic health, newborn health, cardiology and triage and disaster response. In addition, the students are exploring concepts of culture and communication as well as culture’s impact on perceptions of current events across borders.

Seven local men, all over age 70, publish “500 Years of Living”

Six local men and their editor, all over 70 years of age and members of Salve Regina’s Circle of Scholars program, have published a collection of their memoirs documenting “500 Years of Living,” which they will officially launch at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 6 in the McKillop Library.

“500 Years of Living: Memoir Essays by the Men of WriteLife” follows these men as they present vignettes from memorable moments in their lives. The memoirs emanate from “WriteLife,” a Circle of Scholars writing course taught by Jack Galvin.

Three years ago, Galvin challenged six men who had taken his class a number of times to take on the project, prompting them with questions such as “How did you learn about hard work?” “What fight/argument did you win?” and “At a crossroads, what did you lose in your choice?”

The group met once a month to work on the project, ultimately creating 24 essays ranging from 3-5 pages each. Their stories appear in three sections: The Early Years, The Family Years and The Work Years.
